Well, well, well, buckle up folks because I’ve got the ultimate guide to Gozo, Malta’s hidden gem! If you’re looking for a destination that’s packed with stunning scenery, crystal-clear waters, and a laid-back atmosphere, then Gozo is the place for you. As a seasoned traveller, I’ve been to my fair share of islands, but Gozo is truly something special.
Let me tell you, there’s no shortage of things to do in Gozo. Whether you’re a history buff, a beach bum, or a foodie, this little island has got you covered. From exploring the ancient megalithic temples at Ġgantija to soaking up the sun on Ramla Bay, there’s something for everyone. And let’s not forget about the delicious Maltese cuisine – I still dream about the fresh seafood and pastizzi I indulged in during my stay.

Getting to Gozo
Ah, getting to Gozo. The first step on your journey to discovering all the amazing things this little island has to offer. Lucky for you, there are a few different ways to get there.
Ferry Ride
If you’re feeling adventurous (or just want to save some money), take the ferry from Cirkewwa. It’s a short ride that takes around 20-30 minutes, and the views are stunning. Plus, you might even spot some dolphins if you’re lucky! Just make sure to hold on to your hat – it can get a bit windy out there.
Public Bus
If you’re not in a rush and want to save some money, take the public bus. Several bus services stop at Cirkewwa, including the 222 from Silema, the 41 and 42 from Valletta, and the airport bus route X1. It’s a bit of a longer journey, but you’ll get to see some of Malta’s beautiful countryside along the way.
Guided Tour
If you want to sit back, relax, and let someone else do the driving, consider taking a guided tour. There are plenty of companies that offer tours to Gozo, and they’ll take care of everything from transportation to sightseeing. Plus, you’ll get to learn about the island’s history and culture from a knowledgeable guide.
No matter how you decide to get to Gozo, just make sure you take the time to enjoy the journey. After all, it’s not every day you get to travel to a beautiful island like this!
Exploring Victoria
As soon as I stepped foot in Victoria, I knew I was in for a treat. This charming town, also known as Rabat, is the capital of Gozo and is packed with history and culture. Here are some of my favourite must-dos in Victoria.
Citadella
First on my list was the Citadella, a small fortress on top of a hill. The views from the top are breathtaking and the fortress itself is a true marvel of architecture. I spent hours exploring the maze-like streets and admiring the stunning views of the surrounding area.
Museum of Archaeology
For history buffs like me, the Museum of Archaeology is a must-visit. The exhibits are fascinating and showcase the rich history of Gozo and the Maltese islands. I was particularly impressed by the collection of prehistoric artefacts, including some of the oldest pottery in the world.
Independence Square
No visit to Victoria is complete without a stroll through Independence Square. This beautiful square is lined with shops, cafes and restaurants, and is the perfect place to soak up the local atmosphere. I loved sitting back with a coffee and watching the world go by.
Republic Street
Last but not least, Republic Street is the perfect place to indulge in a little retail therapy. This bustling street is lined with shops selling everything from souvenirs to designer clothes. I couldn’t resist picking up a few mementoes to take home with me.
Overall, Victoria is a real gem of a town and I highly recommend taking the time to explore it. From the Citadella to Independence Square, there’s something for everyone.
Diving in Gozo
If you’re looking for an underwater adventure, then Gozo is the place to be! With its clear blue waters and abundance of marine life, it’s no surprise that Gozo is a top destination for scuba diving enthusiasts.
Azure Window
One of the most famous diving spots in Gozo is the Azure Window. Over thousands of years, the sea eroded the limestone cliffs, creating this natural archway. Sadly, the archway collapsed in 2017, but the area is still a popular diving spot. Divers can explore the underwater chimneys, caves, and tunnels that the archway created.
Blue Hole
Another must-visit diving spot in Gozo is the Blue Hole. Towering cliffs surround this natural swimming pool, which is in Dwerja Bay. Divers can descend through the hole and explore the underwater caves and tunnels. Keep an eye out for octopuses, moray eels, and other marine life that call the Blue Hole home.
There are plenty of other scuba-diving sites to explore in Gozo, each with its unique features and marine life. From the Inland Sea to the Santa Maria Caves, there’s something for every level of diver.

If you’re looking for a relaxing day at the beach, Gozo has got you covered. Here are some of my favourite spots:
Ramla Bay
Ramla Bay is a beautiful sandy beach with crystal clear water. It’s the perfect place to unwind and soak up the sun. But beware, the sand here is a striking red colour, so make sure you don’t get it confused with sunburn!
Xlendi Bay
Xlendi Bay is a charming little cove that’s perfect for swimming and snorkelling. The water here is so clear that you can see all kinds of fish swimming around. And if you’re feeling adventurous, you can even rent a kayak or paddleboard and explore the bay from a different perspective.
Marsalforn Salt Pans
If you’re looking for something a little different, head to Marsalforn Salt Pans. These salt pans have been used for hundreds of years to harvest salt from the sea. It’s a fascinating process to watch, and the salt produced here is some of the best in the world. Plus, the view of the sea from here is simply breathtaking.

As a history buff, I couldn’t resist visiting some of Gozo’s most famous historical sites. From the ancient Ggantija Temples to the eerie Old Prison, there’s something for everyone.
Ggantija Temples
The Ggantija Temples are a must-see for anyone interested in ancient architecture. These megalithic temples are over 5,000 years old, making them some of the oldest free-standing structures in the world. And let me tell you, they’re huge! The name “Ggantija” actually means “giant’s tower” in Maltese, and it’s easy to see why. These temples are made up of massive stone blocks, some of which weigh over 50 tons. How on earth did they move those things?
Old Prison
If you’re looking for a spooky experience, the Old Prison is the place to be. It is believed that the ghosts of former inmates haunt this prison, which was in operation from the 16th century until 1962. I didn’t see any ghosts myself (thank goodness), but the atmosphere inside is definitely creepy. The cells are tiny and claustrophobic, and prisoners have left graffiti on the walls over the years. It’s a sobering reminder of just how tough life used to be.

Gozo is a rural paradise with plenty of hiking trails that offer stunning views of the island’s natural beauty. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced hiker, there’s a trail for you. My personal favourite is the Victoria Lines Trail, which runs along the ridge of hills that separates the north and south of the island. The trail offers breathtaking views of the Maltese archipelago and takes you through some of Gozo’s most picturesque villages.
Mountain Biking
If you’re looking for an adventurous way to explore Gozo’s rugged terrain, then mountain biking is the way to go. There are plenty of trails that cater to both beginners and experienced riders. My top pick is the Ta’ Cenc Cliffs Trail, which takes you on a thrilling ride through the island’s stunning coastal cliffs. Just be sure to wear a helmet and bring plenty of water!

My favourite spot is the Blue Lagoon, where you can paddle through crystal clear waters and soak up the sun on the sandy beach.

Gozo’s Cuisine
As a foodie, Gozo is a paradise for me. The cuisine here is a fusion of Maltese and Italian influences, which means lots of pasta, pizza, and seafood. Plus, the prices are very reasonable, with most meals costing between 10-20 euros.
Seafood
Being an island, Gozo has a strong seafood culture. You can find fresh fish and shellfish in every restaurant. My personal favourite is the traditional fish soup, aljotta, which is made with garlic, tomatoes, and fish. Another must-try is calamari, which is usually served with a side of chips and salad.
Wine Tasting
Gozo has a rich wine culture, with several vineyards producing high-quality wines. You can go on a wine-tasting tour and sample some of the best wines in the region. My favourite is the local red wine, which is made from the indigenous grape variety, Gellewza.
Local Produce
Gbejna, a traditional Maltese cheese made from goat or sheep’s milk, is a must-try when you’re in Gozo. It’s usually served as a starter or as part of a cheese platter. You can also find fresh fruit and vegetables in the local markets, which are great for making your own salads or smoothies.
Overall, Gozo’s cuisine is a delight for foodies. With its fusion of Maltese and Italian influences, fresh seafood, and local produce, you’re sure to find something to satisfy your taste buds. Just be sure to bring your appetite!
