You know me, I love to travel, especially long journeys. There’s something about getting comfortable while travelling the world, watching good movies and just feeling like a boss!
I try to get as much sleep the night before I go so I can sleep on the plane and wake up at my destination. If you need to drive for five hours first, get a good night’s sleep and take some Tylenol pm or something else to make you lethargic.
I’m not a drinker, but if it helps you relax and sleep, go for it—just don’t get too drunk. For two reasons, arrive at the airport three hours early.
Arriving early usually gets me a good seat and avoids long lines. Another reason to arrive at the airport three hours before your trip is that if you check in early, you won’t be kicked off the plane. People who arrive late hear the words “overbooked.”
Things to pack in your portable luggage
I try to avoid putting things under the plane whenever possible, but it is occasionally unavoidable, depending on how long I am leaving for.
What you take with you on the plane can have a major effect between having a charming flight and being so mind-blowing exhausted that you go frantic.

Yes, now it’s all radio/music and movies, but sometimes you want your own little playlist on the go. If I can’t sleep, which happens to me, I like to get lost in a good story, but something light and engaging. I’ve always found a good activity book or even sci-fi to be useful for that.
If it’s cold on the plane, bring a big, soft sweater to use as a blanket or cushion. I prefer to play computer games, so I always carry one of the new handheld games with me. If I’m not in the mood to learn, I can play a few games to keep myself engaged, which is the key.
If you stare at the clock and focus on the plane’s progress, the flight will seem like forever. If you keep yourself busy, it will go by quickly.
What’s the best long-haul flight you’ve been on?!
