Red Electrick immediately comes to mind when you think of Maltese music. Since their debut years ago, Red Electrick has emerged as the core of Malta’s music industry. Known for their electrifying performances and emotionally charged tracks, these five rockers have transcended local fame and garner international attention.

2025 is shaping up to be a big year for the band, and we caught up with Matthew James (vocals), Peter Borg (guitar), Aleandro Spiteri Monsigneur (keys), Ivan Borg (bass), and Robert Spiteri (drums) to talk about their journey, their favourite memories, and whatโs next. Oh, and a few surprises too. Letโs dive in!
Q1: So, guys, howโs 2025 looking for Red Electrick? Big plans ahead?
Matthew James: โOh, 2025 is going to be mental! We are currently working on a brand-new album that promises unexpected twists. Itโs more experimental, but it still has that Red Electrick energy. We are also planning a spring European tour, which will include stops in the UK, Italy, and Germany. Weโre pumped to bring Maltaโs music to a wider audience.โ
Q2: An experimental album? Spill the teaโwhatโs different about it?
Aleandro Spiteri Monsigneur: โWeโre playing with some electronic elements, blending them with our rock roots. Think synths, layered harmonies, and a few tracks that even have a bit of a dance vibe. But donโt worry, itโs still us. Thereโs a lot of storytelling, and weโre diving deeper into personal experiences this time around.โ
Peter Borg: โAnd for the first time, weโre including some acoustic tracks. Stripping it down felt raw and honest. Itโs going to be a rollercoaster of emotions, and we canโt wait for fans to hear it.โ
Q3: Looking back at your journey, whatโs been the ultimate highlight?
Robert Spiteri: โThatโs like asking a parent to pick a favourite kid! But honestly, our gig at Isle of MTV Malta will always be a standout. Sharing the stage with international giants was surreal. Also, our acoustic show at St. James Cavalier last yearโit was so intimate, and the crowd was just magical. We had people crying during โYoung Againโ!โ

Ivan Borg: โOh, and we canโt forget when we played in Gozo, and someone literally proposed during one of our songs. That was wild. We felt like part of their storyโitโs a moment weโll never forget.โ
Q4: Any funny backstage moments you can share?
Matthew James: โWhere do we even start? During a sound check, Robert unintentionally set his drumsticks on fire. Donโt ask. We discovered that Aleandro’s keyboard malfunctioned because he had spilt a beer on it the previous night.
Aleandro Spiteri Monsigneur: โHey, it survived, didnโt it? However, the most amusing incident occurred when Ivan found himself trapped in the dressing room just prior to our performance. We had to bribe the venue staff with leftover pizza to get him out!โ

Q5: Whatโs the vibe like when youโre writing music? Whoโs the perfectionist?
Peter Borg: โOh, thatโs definitely Matthew. Heโll tweak a single lyric for hours until itโs perfect.โ
Matthew James: โGuilty as charged! But honestly, weโre all pretty hands-on. Someone might come up with a riff or a melody, and we just build on it together. Itโs all about collaboration, and we donโt stop until it feels right.โ
Robert Spiteri: โSometimes, the best ideas come at the weirdest moments. We once wrote an entire chorus in a kebab shop at 2 a.m.!โ
Q6: What do you think makes the Maltese music scene so special?
Aleandro Spiteri Monsigneur: โThe community. Everyoneโs so supportive, and thereโs a genuine love for live music here. Itโs a small island, but the talent is massive. And because itโs so tight-knit, it feels like weโre all growing together.โ

Q7: If you could collaborate with anyone, dead or alive, who would it be?
Ivan Borg: โFreddie Mercury. No question. Imagine the energy we could create together!โ
Matthew James: โIโd say Adele. Her voice is just something else, and I think blending her soulful style with our rock vibe could be incredible.โ
Peter Borg: โLocally, itโd have to be Ira Losco. Weโve talked about it, so maybe one dayโฆโ
Q8: With a European tour coming up, whatโs one thing youโre taking from Malta to remind you of home?
Robert Spiteri: โPastizzi! Iโm not even joking. We found this little portable oven, so we plan to bring some frozen ones on the road. Itโs like a little taste of home.โ

Matthew James: โAnd Kinnie. You canโt tour without Kinnie.โ
Q9: Whatโs your ultimate message to your fans for 2025?
Matthew James: โThank you for every stream, every ticket, every shout-out. Youโve made us who we are, and weโre so grateful. 2025 is going to be our biggest year yet, and we canโt wait to share it with you. Stay electric, always!โ
