NBC’s “Modern Family” can compete with the best with 22 Primetime Emmys and a 2020 run. The show, whose name came from its focus on modern families, revolutionized television comedy. “Modern Family’s success was due to each member of the complicated family’s great acting.
“Modern Family” has 250 episodes, and the cast often appears in cameos. The stellar cast deserves praise for nailing that much screen time, especially given the series’ widespread acclaim. Now that the show has ended, we’re checking in on the actors to thank them for their outstanding performances.
Ed O’Neill
Ed O’Neill has dominated comedies with grouchy fathers. He played Al Bundy on “Married with Children,” a quirky but oddly familiar sitcom from the 1980s and 1990s. Each position shaped his career differently and lasted about a decade. According to Deadline, the father will also star as the protagonist in the next miniseries, “The Sterling Affairs.”
In his first major TV role since “Modern Family,” O’Neill will play disgraced former Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling in the limited series based on the true story of Sterling’s downfall as coach Doc Rivers tries to turn one of the worst professional sports teams into champions. O’Neill’s charisma and wit won’t be on display in this tough job.
Sofia Vergara
“Modern Family” fans loved Sofia Vergara’s Gloria Delgado-Pritchett. Gloria made Sofia Vergara, a model and promising actress, a star. As the star of “Modern Family,” Aziz Ansari became one of the most beautiful and desirable celebrities. Since 2020, she’s judged “America’s Got Talent” and endorsed many brands.
“Griselda,” a Netflix original series about a mother who creates one of the largest cartels, will star Vergara in late 2021. Vergara’s website lists her businesses, brands, and television roles. They include Head & Shoulders, Rooms To Go, and Payless ads. Sophia Jeans is her fragrance and clothing line.
Julie Bowen
“Modern Family Julie Bowen” plays Claire Dunphy’s fussy mother with ease. Comedic interests persist. In “Hubie Halloween,” a Netflix movie that came out in 2020, Bowen and her “Happy Gilmore” co-star Adam Sandler will work together again. Since “Modern Family” ended, she has appeared in several comic films, including “Totally Killer,” according to Deadline.
In addition to acting, Bowen hosts podcasts. She co-hosts “Quitters” with multi-talented Chad Sanders. The program allows poor people to discuss difficult topics like Bowen’s divorce without discouraging them. In a Forbes interview, Bowen said, “Not that you should stop what you must. We’re discussing how to quit harmful identity-forming activities.” We love Bowen’s new creative and introspective project.
Ty Burrell
Oregon native Ty Burrell is best known for playing the likeable Phil Dunphy, a role for which he won two Emmy Awards, but he has also done a lot of voice acting. After “Finding Nemo,” “Finding Dory,” “Mr. Peabody and Sherman,” and “Storks,” Burrell will voice another cartoon dad in 2020.
In “Duncanville,” Burrell’s son Duncan escapes his mundane life by exploring his fantastic world. Fox cancelled “Duncanville” after its third season in 2022. Deadline reports that six unaired episodes are now on Hulu despite the show’s cancellation.
After “Modern Family” ended, Ty Burrell could play new roles that could make him as popular as Phil Dunphy.
Jesse Tyler Ferguson
After leaving “Modern Family” after 250 episodes as Mitchell Pritchett, Jesse Tyler Ferguson worked on Disney+’s “High School Musical” series in 2022 and the 2023 film “Cocaine Bear.” This Elizabeth Banks-directed film stars Ferguson, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Ray Liotta, Margo Martindale, and “Game of Thrones” star Kristofer Hivju. Ferguson has been performing live as well as on screen.
He starred in “Take Me Out” alongside “Grey’s Anatomy” star Jesse Williams in 2022, winning the Tony Award for best actor in a featured role. “Take Me Out” also won best play revival. Ferguson recently announced on Instagram that he and his husband of over a decade, Justin Mikita, are expecting another child.
Eric Stonestreet
“Modern Family” made Eric Stonestreet as famous as Cameron Tucker. His loving and often chaotic personality was a great contrast to that of his husband Mitchell, who was serious and quiet, and the two of them quickly became fan favorites. Despite their differences, Stonestreet and Jay Dunphy from “Modern Family” love football. He tweets about sports.
He told NFL reporters at the Kansas City Chiefs stadium about his favourite football games from when he was a kid. This is like how Cam became the football coach at the University of Northern Central Missouri in the book.
The Hollywood Reporter reported Stonestreet’s 2019 Kansas City Royals purchase. After “Modern Family” ended, Stonestreet guest judged “America’s Got Talent” and hosted Fox’s “Domino Masters” in 2022.
Rico Rodriguez
Rico Rodriguez, who plays Gloria’s grown-up son Manny Delgado on “Modern Family,” won viewers’ hearts. He’s 11 when the episode starts, but he’s a voice of reason. Rodriguez’s great work was even more impressive because he was his character’s age. Rodriguez has struggled to find job since “Modern Family” ended. He won’t stop acting at 18.
Rodriguez posts photos and videos of his active, fun life on Instagram. He seems to be enjoying life now that he’s an adult and not tied to a decade-long series, and we can’t blame him for taking a break after growing up on TV.
Sarah Hyland
After playing Haley, Phil and Claire’s oldest daughter, on “Modern Family,” Sarah Hyland has been busy. The show ended in 2020, but she continued to star in other projects. Hyland appeared in “My Fake Boyfriend” and the whodunit podcast “Bone, Marry, Bury” in 2022. Hyland starred in “Pitch Perfect: Bumper in Berlin,” a TV spinoff of the film series, in late 2022.
Hyland will star alongside “Modern Family” star Adam DeVine, who will reprise his role as Bumper, and “She-Hulk” and “The Good Place” star Jameela Jamil. Variety reports that the show will follow Bumper’s return to German singing.
Hyland plays his enthusiastic assistant, a want-to-be singer like him. Hyland took over as host of “Love Island Fourth” in 2022, replacing Arielle Vandenberg.
Nolan Gould
Nolan Gould, who grew as a character on screen, played Luke Dunphy, Phil and Claire’s youngest and only son. Despite sharing a birthday with Manny’s Rico Rodriguez, Gould appears to have been advancing his career since “Modern Family.”
In 2022, he appeared in an “Grey’s Anatomy” episode and starred in “Miranda’s Victim” with Abigail Breslin and Donald Sutherland. Gould has improved since leaving “Modern Family.” Gould, a tall, slender teen, is now ripped. “I do an hour of strength training every day and then 30 minutes of cardio and core throughout the day,” Gould told People in 2021. The star appears to be escaping Luke Dunphy in multiple ways.
Ariel Winter
Before and after “Modern Family,” Ariel Winter voiced many characters. She was Abigail Blyg’s voice in “The Quarry” in 2022, but it looks like she’s giving up acting. Since the show’s cancellation, she’s mostly worked in live-action movies and TV shows.
Early in 2022, Deadline said that Winter had replaced Demi Lovato on the new NBC sitcom “Hungry.” She was going back to the network where “Modern Family” had done well. She appeared in “Don’t Log Off” and “Pools.” Winter acts but also directs and produces. “Boys,” a 2021 short, won awards at the Hill Country Film Festival and San Jose International Short Film Festival.
Aubrey Anderson-Emmons.
“Modern Family Anderson-Emmons played Lily, Cam and Mitchell’s adopted daughter. Anderson-Emmons, who debuted on the show at age three, is still a child star. She has only appeared in the short “Distance” since the series finale.
The young star’s only other on-screen work is a cute YouTube channel with her mom where they review different cuisines, and a TikTok channel, where she is famous for lip-syncing to popular songs.
Despite the 2021 video, Anderson-Emmons and her mother’s YouTube channel has over 40,000 subscribers. Her mom appears on her updated TikTok channel. If she wants to act again, her channel has over 1 million followers and she plays Lily well. Understandably, she doesn’t want to return to Hollywood.
Jeremy Maguire
Jeremy Maguire, who plays “Modern Family’s youngest member, Joe Pritchett, was born after the show began. As his character aged in Season 7, Maguire didn’t play him. He played until the series ended. “Modern Family” earned him a 2017 Young Entertainer Award nomination for “best young actor in a television series.”
After “Modern Family” was cancelled, his parents managed his media appearances while he is a minor. He starred in the 2021 Disney+ “Turner & Hooch.”
In 2022’s “The Virgin of Highland Park” with Dermot Mulroney and Jamie-Lynn Sigler, the young actress appeared briefly. Maguire visited Sophia Vergara, his “America’s Got Talent” mom, in 2022.
