Red Electrick immediately comes to mind when you think of Maltese music. Since their debut years ago, Red Electrick has emerged as the core of Malta’s music industry. Known for their electrifying performances and emotionally charged tracks, these five rockers have transcended local fame and garner international attention.

2025 is shaping up to be a big year for the band, and we caught up with Matthew James (vocals), Peter Borg (guitar), Aleandro Spiteri Monsigneur (keys), Ivan Borg (bass), and Robert Spiteri (drums) to talk about their journey, their favourite memories, and whatâs next. Oh, and a few surprises too. Letâs dive in!
Q1: So, guys, howâs 2025 looking for Red Electrick? Big plans ahead?
Matthew James: âOh, 2025 is going to be mental! We are currently working on a brand-new album that promises unexpected twists. Itâs more experimental, but it still has that Red Electrick energy. We are also planning a spring European tour, which will include stops in the UK, Italy, and Germany. Weâre pumped to bring Maltaâs music to a wider audience.â
Q2: An experimental album? Spill the teaâwhatâs different about it?
Aleandro Spiteri Monsigneur: âWeâre playing with some electronic elements, blending them with our rock roots. Think synths, layered harmonies, and a few tracks that even have a bit of a dance vibe. But donât worry, itâs still us. Thereâs a lot of storytelling, and weâre diving deeper into personal experiences this time around.â
Peter Borg: âAnd for the first time, weâre including some acoustic tracks. Stripping it down felt raw and honest. Itâs going to be a rollercoaster of emotions, and we canât wait for fans to hear it.â
Q3: Looking back at your journey, whatâs been the ultimate highlight?
Robert Spiteri: âThatâs like asking a parent to pick a favourite kid! But honestly, our gig at Isle of MTV Malta will always be a standout. Sharing the stage with international giants was surreal. Also, our acoustic show at St. James Cavalier last yearâit was so intimate, and the crowd was just magical. We had people crying during âYoung Againâ!â

Ivan Borg: âOh, and we canât forget when we played in Gozo, and someone literally proposed during one of our songs. That was wild. We felt like part of their storyâitâs a moment weâll never forget.â
Q4: Any funny backstage moments you can share?
Matthew James: âWhere do we even start? During a sound check, Robert unintentionally set his drumsticks on fire. Donât ask. We discovered that Aleandro’s keyboard malfunctioned because he had spilt a beer on it the previous night.
Aleandro Spiteri Monsigneur: âHey, it survived, didnât it? However, the most amusing incident occurred when Ivan found himself trapped in the dressing room just prior to our performance. We had to bribe the venue staff with leftover pizza to get him out!â

Q5: Whatâs the vibe like when youâre writing music? Whoâs the perfectionist?
Peter Borg: âOh, thatâs definitely Matthew. Heâll tweak a single lyric for hours until itâs perfect.â
Matthew James: âGuilty as charged! But honestly, weâre all pretty hands-on. Someone might come up with a riff or a melody, and we just build on it together. Itâs all about collaboration, and we donât stop until it feels right.â
Robert Spiteri: âSometimes, the best ideas come at the weirdest moments. We once wrote an entire chorus in a kebab shop at 2 a.m.!â
Q6: What do you think makes the Maltese music scene so special?
Aleandro Spiteri Monsigneur: âThe community. Everyoneâs so supportive, and thereâs a genuine love for live music here. Itâs a small island, but the talent is massive. And because itâs so tight-knit, it feels like weâre all growing together.â

Q7: If you could collaborate with anyone, dead or alive, who would it be?
Ivan Borg: âFreddie Mercury. No question. Imagine the energy we could create together!â
Matthew James: âIâd say Adele. Her voice is just something else, and I think blending her soulful style with our rock vibe could be incredible.â
Peter Borg: âLocally, itâd have to be Ira Losco. Weâve talked about it, so maybe one dayâŠâ
Q8: With a European tour coming up, whatâs one thing youâre taking from Malta to remind you of home?
Robert Spiteri: âPastizzi! Iâm not even joking. We found this little portable oven, so we plan to bring some frozen ones on the road. Itâs like a little taste of home.â

Matthew James: âAnd Kinnie. You canât tour without Kinnie.â
Q9: Whatâs your ultimate message to your fans for 2025?
Matthew James: âThank you for every stream, every ticket, every shout-out. Youâve made us who we are, and weâre so grateful. 2025 is going to be our biggest year yet, and we canât wait to share it with you. Stay electric, always!â
