Red Electrick immediately comes to mind when you think of Maltese music. Since their debut years ago, Red Electrick has emerged as the core of Malta’s music industry. Known for their electrifying performances and emotionally charged tracks, these five rockers have transcended local fame and are garnering attention internationally.

2025 is shaping up to be a big year for the band, and we caught up with Matthew James (vocals), Peter Borg (guitar), Aleandro Spiteri Monsigneur (keys), Ivan Borg (bass), and Robert Spiteri (drums) to talk about their journey, their favourite memories, and what’s next. Oh, and a few surprises too. Let’s dive in!

Q1: So, guys, how’s 2025 looking for Red Electrick? Big plans ahead?

Matthew James: “Oh, 2025 is going to be mental! We are currently working on a brand-new album that promises unexpected twists. It’s more experimental, but it still has that Red Electrick energy. We are also planning a spring European tour, which will include stops in the UK, Italy, and Germany. We’re pumped to bring Malta’s music to a wider audience.”

Q2: An experimental album? Spill the tea—what’s different about it?

Aleandro Spiteri Monsigneur: “We’re playing with some electronic elements, blending them with our rock roots. Think synths, layered harmonies, and a few tracks that even have a bit of a dance vibe. But don’t worry, it’s still us. There’s a lot of storytelling, and we’re diving deeper into personal experiences this time around.”

Peter Borg: “And for the first time, we’re including some acoustic tracks. Stripping it down felt raw and honest. It’s going to be a rollercoaster of emotions, and we can’t wait for fans to hear it.”

Q3: Looking back at your journey, what’s been the ultimate highlight?

Robert Spiteri: “That’s like asking a parent to pick a favourite kid! But honestly, our gig at Isle of MTV Malta will always be a standout. Sharing the stage with international giants was surreal. Also, our acoustic show at St. James Cavalier last year—it was so intimate, and the crowd was just magical. We had people crying during ‘Young Again’!”

Ivan Borg: “Oh, and we can’t forget when we played in Gozo, and someone literally proposed during one of our songs. That was wild. We felt like part of their story—it’s a moment we’ll never forget.”

Q4: Any funny backstage moments you can share?

Matthew James: “Where do we even start? During a sound check, Robert unintentionally set his drumsticks on fire. Don’t ask. We discovered that Aleandro’s keyboard malfunctioned because he had spilt a beer on it the previous night.

Aleandro Spiteri Monsigneur: “Hey, it survived, didn’t it? However, the most amusing incident occurred when Ivan found himself trapped in the dressing room just prior to our performance. We had to bribe the venue staff with leftover pizza to get him out!”

Q5: What’s the vibe like when you’re writing music? Who’s the perfectionist?

Peter Borg: “Oh, that’s definitely Matthew. He’ll tweak a single lyric for hours until it’s perfect.”

Matthew James: “Guilty as charged! But honestly, we’re all pretty hands-on. Someone might come up with a riff or a melody, and we just build on it together. It’s all about collaboration, and we don’t stop until it feels right.”

Robert Spiteri: “Sometimes, the best ideas come at the weirdest moments. We once wrote an entire chorus in a kebab shop at 2 a.m.!”

Q6: What do you think makes the Maltese music scene so special?

Aleandro Spiteri Monsigneur: “The community. Everyone’s so supportive, and there’s a genuine love for live music here. It’s a small island, but the talent is massive. And because it’s so tight-knit, it feels like we’re all growing together.”

Q7: If you could collaborate with anyone, dead or alive, who would it be?

Ivan Borg: “Freddie Mercury. No question. Imagine the energy we could create together!”

Matthew James: “I’d say Adele. Her voice is just something else, and I think blending her soulful style with our rock vibe could be incredible.”

Peter Borg: “Locally, it’d have to be Ira Losco. We’ve talked about it, so maybe one day…”

Q8: With a European tour coming up, what’s one thing you’re taking from Malta to remind you of home?

Robert Spiteri: “Pastizzi! I’m not even joking. We found this little portable oven, so we’re planning to bring some frozen ones on the road. It’s like a little taste of home.”

Matthew James: “And Kinnie. You can’t tour without Kinnie.”

Q9: What’s your ultimate message to your fans for 2025?

Matthew James: “Thank you for every stream, every ticket, every shout-out. You’ve made us who we are, and we’re so grateful. 2025 is going to be our biggest year yet, and we can’t wait to share it with you. Stay electric, always!”
