Alright, lads and ladies — get your flat caps out of storage and pour yourself a stiff whiskey, because the Peaky Blinders are heading to the big screen. Yes, you read that right. After six seasons of scheming, shootouts, and that intense Tommy Shelby stare, our favourite Brummie gangsters are swapping the TV for a full-on cinematic showdown.

The best part? Cillian Murphy is back. And not just back — back-back. By order of the Shelby family, we have all the dirt on the upcoming Peaky Blinders movie.

Netflix seals the deal

Netflix officially confirmed the movie on 4 June 2024, and the internet immediately exploded like a backroom whiskey still. Not only is the streaming giant bringing us the film, but Tom Harper — the director behind some of the best Season 1 episodes — is returning to work his magic.

The script? Hand-delivered from the typewriter of series creator Steven Knight, so expect every “Oi, Tommy!” and every ominous pause to feel authentically Peaky.

And then there’s this little gem from Cillian Murphy himself:

“It seems like Tommy Shelby wasn’t finished with me… This is one for the fans.”

Translation: sharpen your razors, the gang’s not done with us yet.

Why a movie, not a season?

Originally, Knight planned for seven seasons of Peaky Blinders, but life (and a global pandemic) had other ideas. COVID-19 delays and the heartbreaking loss of Helen McCrory, who played the unforgettable Polly Grey, changed the course of the story.

Knight decided that instead of squeezing another season out, the Shelby saga deserved a proper big-screen send-off — one he’s calling “the end of the beginning.” That’s right, folks. The movie is not the end-end, just the closing of one chapter before the next inevitably bursts through the door, gun in hand.

Filming starts September 2024 — and they’re going home

Mark your calendars: this September, the Shelbys are back on set. Filming will take place in Digbeth, Birmingham — a location steeped in real-life Peaky Blinders history.

While the series filmed a lot in Northern England (Dudley, Liverpool, Leeds), this is a homecoming of sorts. And you can bet that the streets of Birmingham will once again be filled with smoke, swagger, and suspiciously well-tailored suits.

The plot? WWII gets the Peaky treatment

Knight has teased that the film will be based on a true story from World War II — told, of course, in the “Peaky” way. Which probably means real historical events… but with more whiskey, more grit, and a lot more Cillian Murphy lighting cigarettes in slow motion.

No official synopsis yet, but Knight has hinted the movie could set the stage for spin-offs. So, this could be the start of a whole new Shelby cinematic universe. (SCU, anyone?)

Cillian Murphy’s return = Peaky perfection

Let’s be honest, you can’t have Peaky Blinders without Tommy Shelby. You just can’t. Knight confirmed Murphy’s return, and the actor has always said he’d revisit Tommy’s world if there was more story to tell.

So yes, the razor-blade-wielding, morally ambiguous king of Birmingham will be leading the charge — and honestly, that’s all we needed to hear.

The future of the Peaky Blinders universe

Knight has made it clear: the movie is just the beginning of the next chapter. He’s already imagining stories that go far beyond WWII, potentially through more films or spin-off series.

Considering the Peaky Blinders fandom is still going strong worldwide, don’t be surprised if the Shelby name carries on for decades to come. (Honestly, we’d watch “Peaky Blinders: The Retirement Years” if Cillian still had the hat and that stare.)

While you wait… binge like a Shelby

All six seasons are still on Netflix, so now’s the time for a rewatch. Pay attention to the details, brush up on your Peaky quotes, and maybe learn how to pour whiskey without spilling a drop.

Because when the movie drops, you’ll want to be ready to join the family.
