Firefly Lane won’t return for season 3 on Netflix, but there is good news for fans of the series. Adapted from Kristen Hannah’s novel, Firefly Lane tells the story of two best friends, Tully and Kate, who have been inseparable for over three decades.
Season 2, part 2 of Firefly Lane, just premiered on April 27th, 2023, and marked the end of the series. But the good news is that the story has been completed, so there won’t be any unresolved cliffhangers to agonize over.
So, if you haven’t watched the show yet, now is the perfect time to dive in and watch the entire series from beginning to end. Even though the show ended, it wasn’t cancelled, and it concluded the story it was trying to tell. Netflix had announced that the show would end in October 2022, several months after it had been renewed for season 2.
Season 2 was a “super-sized” season, released in two parts. While some might argue that Firefly Lane was “cancelled,” it’s important to note that the show ended on its terms and wrapped up the story.
If you’ve seen the end of season 2, you would know that the show’s conclusion was apparent. After all, Kate’s journey has ended following her battle with cancer, and the show concludes with her funeral, which is similar to the book’s ending. When the credits roll, you’ll hear ABBA’s Dancing Queen playing in the background.
In an interview with The Wrap, showrunner Maggie Friedman explained that they had discussed how Kate’s death would play out in the writer’s room.
They finally agreed that Kate was hanging on until she knew everyone would be okay.
It’s also worth noting that there is a sequel to Firefly Lane called Fly Away. The book deals with the aftermath of Kate’s death and its impact on the characters’ lives. While there aren’t any plans to adapt the sequel, the writer of the novels has expressed interest in a third book.
Regarding Netflix’s upcoming series, plenty of feel-good romance dramas are in the works, including returning favorites like Virgin River season 5 and Sweet Magnolias season 3. There are also book adaptations like One Day In December and Ransom Canyon in development.
So, while Firefly Lane won’t be returning for season 3, there’s plenty of other exciting content to look forward to on Netflix.
