It’s nice to talk about fashion and what to wear. But have you ever taken a step back to think about why you’re so interested in the subject?
Perhaps it’s something that started when you were in school. Or maybe you became a devotee of fashion in your later years when you discovered that there was a whole new world out there.
Fashion, however, doesn’t just spring magically out of the ground like a tree. Instead, it comes from various trendsetters who take a risk. We’ve seen this so many times over the years. Somebody who people think is cool starts wearing something new, like emerald Claddagh rings and then, suddenly, everyone wants to do it.
Why is this? It probably all comes down to the way we’re wired socially. Many of us like to go along with what the leaders are doing because it helps us to fit in with the society around us. We don’t want to stick out like sore thumbs – we want to blend.
However, there are some people who don’t mind taking a risk – at least, socially speaking. And so they are the ones that help to move fashion forwards.
This idea that fashions can change is actually relatively new in human history. In the past, people just wore rags of traditional garments. And there weren’t any fashion houses pumping out new designs every season.
But that’s all changed, and now we’re so wealthy that fashion is something that can just follow the calendar. You know the moment spring hits, all the big names are going to release their new lines.
It’s An Identity
There’s also the fact that fashion and identity are now becoming bound up with each other. It used to be the case that people would dress up and see fashion as something that they did for special occasions. It was separate from their identity, like going for vacations in the summer or eating Christmas cake during the holidays.
But now that’s all changed. What you wear says something about you as a person, whether you like it or not. This social landscape can be very difficult to navigate. And it is now almost impossible to find clothes that strike the perfect balance between what you actually want to wear and what will allow you to fit into social situations.
It’s A Following
Fashion is also something that’s now become easier than ever to follow, mainly because of the explosion of fashionistas on social media. The level of creativity of these people is extraordinary. And they seem to have an almost magical ability to come up with new styles that they wear with pride.
Trying to look perfect, therefore, has become a full-time profession. And fashion is a way to do that. We want to know what the celebs are doing so that we can follow in their footsteps and perhaps improve our own style. It’s important to remember though, that a lot of what happens is relative to time and place.
