The Mediterranean flavours in Malta are already exceptional, but imagine mixing them with Cuba’s bold, vibrant, and oh-so-addictive flavours. That’s exactly what you get when you step into Café Cuba! Recently, Thomas and I have been on a bit of a foodie adventure, and this Maltese chain restaurant, perched beautifully overlooking St Julian’s Bay, has quickly become one of our favourite spots.

Why? Incredible food, warm hospitality, and an atmosphere that transports you straight to the sun-soaked streets of Havana!
Step Inside Café Cuba.
Upon entering Café Cuba, a laid-back yet lively Caribbean vibe instantly greets you. Think retro Cuban posters, wooden panelled walls, and bursts of tropical colours that make you feel like you’ve just stepped off a plane and landed in a salsa-infused paradise.
The outdoor terrace is the real showstopper! Sitting by the bay with a cold drink, watching the waves roll in—it’s an experience. Whether you’re here for a lazy brunch, a casual dinner, or a cheeky cocktail (or three), the setting makes every moment feel special.
Flavours that Dance on Your Tongue

Now let’s talk about the star of the show, the food. Café Cuba boasts a mouthwatering menu that takes classic Cuban dishes and gives them a Mediterranean twist, resulting in bold, comforting, and unforgettable flavours.
Must-Try Dishes
- Ropa Vieja: A Cuban must! This slow-cooked shredded beef stew is rich and savoury, and it is filled with Cuban spices.
- The Cuban Sandwich: Layers of roasted pork, ham, Swiss cheese, mustard, and pickles, all pressed to crispy, golden perfection. A bite of this, and you’re instantly transported to a Havana street corner.
- Caribbean Jerk Chicken: juicy, marinated chicken grilled perfectly, served with spicy rice and beans. A real flavour explosion.
- Seafood Paella: Why not bring a bit of Spain into the mix? Fresh seafood and perfectly seasoned saffron rice make this a winner.
- Cuba Pizza: A wood-fired delight topped with spicy chorizo, jalapeños, mozzarella, and a hint of honey for a unique sweet-and-spicy kick.
Cocktail Time!
Cuban cuisine is nothing without iconic drinks; Café Cuba does not disappoint. Their mojito? Chef’s kiss! Made with freshly muddled mint, lime, sugar, and premium Cuban rum, it’s the ultimate refreshment after a long day.

If you’re after something stronger, the Cuba Libre (rum, cola, lime) is a classic, while their tropical Piña Colada will have you swaying to imaginary salsa beats. Oh, and let’s not forget the Havana Espresso Martini for those who love cocktails with a caffeine kick!
The Service: As Warm as the Caribbean Sun
One of the things that makes Café Cuba extra special is the incredible staff. The staff welcomes you like an old friend from the moment you walk in. The staff is knowledgeable, friendly, and more than happy to recommend their favourite dishes if you are struggling to decide (and, trust me, you will). The food arrives quickly and beautifully plated, and what about the portions? Let’s just say you won’t be leaving hungry!
My Visit to Cafe Cuba in Malta
The best time to visit is definitely at sunset; grab a seat outside, order a cocktail, and take in the stunning view over St Julian’s Bay. If you’re visiting for the first time, the Cuban sandwich and mojito combo is an obvious choice. Feeling a bit adventurous? Ask the staff about any off-menu specials; they sometimes have limited-edition dishes that are absolutely worth trying. On a budget?
They serve light snacks and coffee from 9 AM, and their bistro menu from noon is packed with delicious, affordable options. And if you’re a pizza lover, you’re in luck—their wood-burning Neapolitan oven turns out some of the best local pizzas, perfect for a laid-back evening bite.

Final Verdict: Worth the Hype?
Absolutely! Whether you’re after a taste of Havana, a relaxed beachside meal, or just a killer cocktail, Café Cuba ticks all the boxes. The combination of great food, a fun atmosphere, and an unbeatable location makes Café Cuba a must-visit for anyone in Malta.
