There’s something magical about waking up on an MSC Cruise, pulling back the curtains and spotting a brand-new destination waiting outside your balcony.
That’s precisely what happened to us aboard MSC Splendida.
After days of incredible food, endless entertainment and making friends from all over the world, we arrived in Cagliari, the colourful capital of Sardinia. Honestly? It quickly became one of my favourite stops.
The best part? You don’t need an expensive excursion to enjoy it. Most of the city’s highlights are either within walking distance or a short taxi ride from the cruise terminal, making it the perfect port for exploring at your own pace.
First Stop: Wander Through Castello
If Cagliari had a heart, it would be Castello.
Perched high above the harbour, this mediaeval neighbourhood feels like stepping into another century.
You’ll discover:
- Tiny cobbled streets
- Colourful shutters
- Hidden cafés
- Ancient towers
- Beautiful churches
- Stunning viewpoints around every corner
It’s impossible not to stop every few minutes for another photo.
One of the highlights is the Bastione di Saint Remy, where you can enjoy panoramic views stretching across the harbour and the sparkling Mediterranean Sea. It’s the kind of place that makes you pause for a minute and simply take it all in.
Grab an Italian Coffee (Because… obviously).
One thing Italy always gets right?
Forget rushing.
Find a little café, order an espresso (or two), people-watch and soak up the slower Sardinian pace of life.
If you’re like me, you’ll probably also end up buying a pastry you definitely didn’t intend to buy…
No regrets.
Visit Poetto Beach
If you’ve had enough sightseeing and simply want to relax, jump in a taxi and head to Poetto Beach.
With kilometres of golden sand and crystal-clear water, it’s easy to see why locals spend so much time here.
Whether you fancy:
- Swimming
- Sunbathing
- Cocktails by the sea
- A leisurely stroll along the promenade
…it’s a brilliant way to spend a cruise afternoon before heading back onboard.
Hunt for the Perfect Gelato
Let’s be honest…
Is it even an Italian cruise stop if you don’t eat gelato?
Try classic flavours like the following:
- Pistachio
- Stracciatella
- Lemon
- Hazelnut
Or be adventurous and sample local Sardinian flavours if you spot them.
Calories don’t count when you’re exploring… right?

Cagliari has plenty of boutiques selling the following:
- Handmade jewellery
- Leather goods
- Local wines
- Olive oil
- Sardinian ceramics
- Artisan souvenirs
It’s a lovely place to pick up something that isn’t another fridge magnet (although… I may have bought one anyway).
Spot Pink Flamingos
One of the coolest surprises?
Yes… flamingos.
Just outside the city is the Molentargius lagoon, where thousands of wild pink flamingos live throughout much of the year.
Definitely not something I expected to tick off on an Italian cruise!

Don’t Wander Too Far…
One of the things I loved about Cagliari is how close everything is to the cruise port.
Unlike some destinations where you spend ages travelling, here you can comfortably explore the city, enjoy lunch, fit in a little shopping and still make it back onboard with time to spare.
Back Onboard MSC Splendida
After a full day exploring, returning to MSC Splendida honestly felt like coming back to a floating hotel.
One minute you’re wandering ancient Italian streets…
The next you are:
- Watching the sunset from the deck
- Enjoying another incredible dinner
- Heading to a theatre show
- Finishing the evening with cocktails and live music
There’s something wonderfully comforting about unpacking once and waking up somewhere completely different every morning.
Final Thoughts
Cagliari might not always be the first Mediterranean cruise destination people talk about, but it absolutely deserves a place on your itinerary.
Between its mediaeval streets, breathtaking viewpoints, beautiful beaches, delicious food and laid-back atmosphere, it’s the kind of city that quietly steals your heart.
